How to use a portion of monitor screen in Linux Mint

How to use a portion of monitor screen in Linux Mint

My left portion of screen (1920x1080) is damaged, I want to use the right portion only.

  1. I try to switch to 1280x960 resolution using command xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1280x960 I see if total blank area on both sides is equal to my damaged portion.
  2. But problem is the previous command put the screen in center not right. So I tried using the command with transform xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1280x960 --transform 1,0,-640,0,1,0,0,0,1 this shifted the screen enough to right that all the damaged area is clear but the portion of screen is still backed out on right and the shifted portion is just not showing it is going out of display.
  3. I tried using panning options as well. xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1280x960 --panning 1920x1080+480+0 and xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1280x960 --panning 1920x1080-480+0 It didn't shift the screen to right.

Can someone suggest what is correct way to shift to right?

PS: I am using HP Pavilion 15 laptop. Please find the output of xrandr --verbose below

Top Answer/Comment:

It's doubtful there is any way to force all applications to use only part of the screen.

However, here is a workaround that might help: put an unused app in the bad part of the screen, and use Mint's tiling and snapping to arrange other apps in the useful part.

BTW, consider that any damage, such as a crack or delamination, is likely to propagate, gradually destroying more of the screen. You might use an external monitor, such as these from Amazon, which start around US$40, perhaps less than a replacement display.
