Difference between "vicinity" and "vicinage" and why is there less and less of them in Books?

Aside from frequency in Books, are there any differences in terms of meaning, usage or register/connotation between

vicinity [plural vicinities] [Merriam-Webster]: 1: a surrounding area or district: neighborhood

2: neighborhood sense 3b {an approximate amount, extent, or degree

  • cost in the neighborhood of $100} [qv]

3: the quality or state of being near: proximity

and

vicinage [Merriam-Webster]:

a neighboring or surrounding district: vicinity

Books seem to contain less and less of these two words; is that correlated to the rise in the usage of neighborhood? Is the ngram showing anything meaningful here?

Top Answer/Comment:

Comment: "Vicinage" is described as rare by Collins dictionary. Presumably it is rare enough to be omitted from the spell checker's dictionary, and "villeinage" was its closest approximation.
